Full Name: Mario Pizarro Rojas

Hometown: Viña del Mar/Maipu, Chile

School: California State University, Los Angeles

Program: M.S. in Biochemistry

Originally from Chile, I arrived in the United States at the age of 9. Growing up undocumented has driven me to be involved in social justice work. As a scientific researcher in training I am interested in creating novel therapies for illnesses that can be easily affordable and accessible to marginalized communities.

Fun Fact:

I am part of a collective of citizen-scientists named Free Radicals that aims to include a critical social justice lens into science.

What advice would you give to future undocumented students applying to graduate programs?

Try going to admissions events or graduate resource fairs whenever possible. You can rack up fee waivers in these events. Also, it doesn’t hurt to e-mail schools for fee waivers too!
