Pre-Health Dreamers* (PHD) was started in 2012 by three undocumented immigrant young people—Denisse Rojas, New Latthivongskorn, and Angel Ku, who were actively pursuing careers in health and science. Denisse, New and Angel had witnessed firsthand the dearth of resources available for undocumented students in these fields, and envisioned a project that could support undocumented young people like themselves. PHD’s staff is based in either Northern or Southern California.
PHD supports undocumented young people by serving as: 1) a trusted community of undocumented students, 2) a resource of unprecedented knowledge on related career pathways, and 3) an advocate for increased access to health careers and health care for the undocumented community. In the past six years, PHD has made considerable progress in making health professional programs more accessible to undocumented young people. These achievements include:
The creation of a network that includes over 1200 undocumented immigrant youth in over 45 states.
The creation of novel programming for health professional school applicants; 45 participants have successfully gained admissions to medical school, nursing school, dental school, and other programs within the past three years.
Spearheading two legislations in California to provide access to career licensing and health professions to immigrants regardless of immigration status with partner organizations.
Partnering with leading academic institutions to promote inclusive policies for undocumented students entering health professions programs.
Creating public awareness about the needs of pre-health undocumented young people through exposure in prominent media outlets such as LA Times, KQED, MSNBC, National Public Radio, and Univisión.
Receiving financial support from leading funders in immigrant rights and health care.
Receiving recognition in Forbes 30 Under 30 magazine for creating more equity in education for undocumented students in 2017 and American Federation of Teachers’ Bayard Rustin Human Rights Award in 2018.
PHD is proud to receive generous financial support from individual donors, family and health foundations, including The California Endowment, Kaiser Permanente, and the Leslie Family Foundation.
The Director will be responsible for all activities and outcomes relating to the Pre-Health Dreamers (PHD) project, as detailed below. The director will be based in California (Northern or California). Specifically, they will:
Carry through all PHD related projects and measure impact on the undocumented pre-health student population.
Be responsible for development, administrative duties, finances of PHD.
Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with PHD student members, educators, stakeholders, and funders/donors.
Engage in public relations for PHD-related events, activities, and news.
KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Engage in strategic planning to envision and carry through PHD’s short and long-term goals in collaboration with PHD Project Manager.
Be responsible for fundraising for PHD staff salary and program expenses including completing grant proposals, grant reports, maintaining relationships with PHD donors/funders, and envisioning and establishing new sources of financial support.
Spearhead new grant applications and identify further sources of funding for PHD.
Engage in relationship-building with PHD members through social media, email, and in-person events.
Provide one-on-one advising to PHD student members from a wide range of pre-health professions including medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, among others; respond and follow up promptly to individual needs.
Engage in event planning to host PHD socials and community-building events.
Engage in efforts to build leadership capacity among PHD members and volunteers to be able to meaningfully contribute to PHD’s projects and mission.
Provide one-on-one support to pre-health advisors and educators through email inquiries and social media.
Engage in media relations by responding to interview requests and making media requests to highlight key PHD advocacy efforts and PHD members’ narratives.
Engage in independent media projects and in collaboration with organizational partners as opportunities arise.
Frequently update the PHD community with news, events and updates relevant to health careers and health care for the undocumented community through social media (Facebook, twitter, etc.) & the PHD listserv.
Institutionalize PHD knowledge through online documents and spreadsheets that are organized in an accessible manner.
Maintain PHD budget up-to-date and submit check-requests and reimbursements.
Maintain ongoing communication with Community Initiative staff (fiscal sponsor) for any requests.
In collaboration with the PHD Project Manager, oversee programming to provide peer and professional support to a group of undocumented students applying to health professions schools and carry through the grant objectives relating to the project.
Engage in advocacy to promote inclusive policies among health professions schools.
Engage in advocacy to expand access to financial support for undocumented students in health professions schools.
Maintain ongoing relationships with stakeholders in health professions school.
Coordinate and lead presentations at pre-health conference, events, and other educational settings.
Update current PHD resources and lead the creation of new resources.
The Pre-Health Dreamers Director will be thoroughly committed to PHD’s mission and vision.
Concrete demonstrable experience and qualifications include:
A bachelor’s or graduate degree related to either the health professions or student support services.
Passionate commitment to immigration & education rights with knowledge and/or personal connection to the undocumented student experience.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience as an advisor to students at the college level.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in communications with direct experience in developing and implementing successful strategies to raise public awareness and support for social justice causes.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in nonprofit program building and execution.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in nonprofit management.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in nonprofit development (i.e. grant writing, reporting).
Minimum of 6 months’ experience in public relations.
COMPETENCIES, SKILLS, AND ATTRIBUTES:

Superior analytical and writing skills with the ability to retain, synthesize, and effectively communicate information to diverse populations.

Ability to use good judgment and multi-task in order to identify, address, and adapt to changing needs.
Experience in managing existing donor relations, and grant reports.
A vision for fundraising growth through grant applications, individual donor solicitations, and crowdfunding.
Strong oral presentation skills.
Demonstrates creativity in carrying out projects.
Ability to relate and empathize with diverse communities.
Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of individuals (students, educators, donors/funders, administrators, press, legislators, etc.).
Sense of humor and high emotional intelligence.
Graduate degree preferred.
Managing team - Personnel background, figuring out contracts, labor, reviewing contracts, benefits etc.
In-depth understanding of the pre-health student experience.
Strong familiarity with diverse communication platforms/media (including websites, social media, blogs, email newsletters, etc.).
Basic understanding of higher education institutions’ structures and hierarchy.

TIME COMMITMENT & COMPENSATION:
Full time, exempt position based on a 40-hour work week, with some evenings and weekends required. Competitive salary depending on experience, with generous vacation, sick leave, health, dental, vision, and retirement benefits.
